Arusha National Park is often treated as a transit stop between Kilimanjaro Airport and the Northern Circuit. That is a significant underestimation. In a single half-day, you can move from the forested rim of Ngurdoto Crater, where buffalo and hippo graze far below, to the alkaline Momella Lakes where flamingos gather in their thousands, before tracking giraffes through montane forest on the lower slopes of Mount Meru — Kilimanjaro’s underrated neighbour.
Key Distinction — Arusha National Park is Tanzania's closest park to Kilimanjaro International Airport, and the only place in Northern Tanzania where you can canoe among hippos and flamingos on alkaline lakes.
01 / Ngurdoto Crater
A lush, forested crater whose floor is a permanently closed sanctuary — no vehicles permitted inside. Views from the rim look down on buffalos, warthogs, and hippos grazing in the swampy crater below, while colobus monkeys inhabit the surrounding forest rim.
02 / Momella Lakes
A series of seven shallow alkaline and freshwater lakes, each with different mineral contents and varying flamingo densities. This is the only place in Tanzania where canoe safaris among hippos and flamingos are permitted.
03 / Mount Meru Forest
The montane forest on Meru’s lower slopes is home to black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and giraffes browsing among tall trees. Guided walking safaris with an armed ranger are permitted here.
04 / Mount Meru Summit Cone
Africa’s fifth-highest mountain (4,566m) and one of Tanzania’s finest trekking routes. A three-to-four-day ascent offers dramatic scenery, a genuine summit challenge, and views of Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds to the east.
Arusha National Park rewards visits at any time of year, though the experience changes significantly between seasons. Select a month to understand current conditions.
Most visitors only see Arusha National Park through a coach window on the way to or from the airport. The difference is in sequencing — knowing which zone photographs best at which hour, and building in the canoe safari and forest walk that day-tour operators routinely skip.
We schedule Arusha visits around the early morning crater light and reserve mid-morning for the canoe launch, when the lake is calmest and the flamingo flocks are most active.
Enter through the Ngurdoto gate and drive to the crater rim to see buffalos and hippos on the crater floor below. Colobus monkeys are common in the forest along the rim road.
Move to the Momella Lakes as the morning light peaks. Flamingo flocks line the shallow water while giraffes browse the yellow fever acacia trees along the shore.
Board a stable double canoe on Little Momella Lake for a silent, water-level approach to the flamingo flocks, hippos, and pelicans alongside an armed TANAPA ranger escort.
An optional 90-minute guided walking safari through the montane forest with an armed TANAPA ranger to track wildlife on foot.
Exit the park by midday to head to Kilimanjaro International Airport, your Arusha hotel, or onwards toward Tarangire National Park.
Yes. The combination of giraffes, buffalos, flamingos, colobus monkeys, hippos, and the backdrop of Mount Meru makes for a highly rewarding half-day safari. The canoe experience on Momella Lakes is completely unique to Northern Tanzania.
Not exactly. Lions and elephants are absent from the main game-viewing areas (though elephants occasionally cross the upper mountain slopes). Leopards are present but rarely seen. The park instead excels in high densities of giraffes, buffalos, zebras, and spectacular birdlife.
Yes. Mount Meru is a 3-to-4-day trekking route ascending to 4,566m, which requires TANAPA guides and armed rangers. It is commonly used as an acclimatization trek before tackling Mount Kilimanjaro.
It lasts approximately 90 minutes across Little Momella Lake. You ride in a stable double canoe equipped with life jackets, escorted by a trained TANAPA ranger, moving silently right alongside hippos and waterbirds.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is roughly 45 minutes from the park's main gate, making it an ideal activity for a departure day.
Yes. The absence of large predators, the shorter half-day driving format, and the availability of walking and canoe options make it highly engaging for children. Walking safaris require children to be over 12 years old.
