A photographic safari is a different discipline to a standard game drive. Success depends on light, angle, patience and position — and on a guide who understands that waiting forty minutes for a lion to lift its head into golden light is exactly the point, not a delay.
Our photographic safaris start before dawn and stay out for the last light, because the hours either side of sunrise and sunset are when the magic happens. Vehicles carry beanbags on every window row and we limit seats so everyone gets a clear, unobstructed firing line. Where the terrain and park rules allow, we position low and side-on to the light rather than simply pulling up alongside.
Your guide is chosen for their photographic instinct — anticipating behaviour, killing the engine at the right moment, and repositioning for the catchlight in the eye. Whether you're shooting a flagship mirrorless setup or a bridge camera, the whole trip is engineered to maximise your keeper rate. Expect around $500–$1,100 per person per day depending on tier, with limited-seat vehicles for clear sightlines.
Our photographic safaris are built on four pillars that maximise your keeper rate on every game drive.
Photographic accommodation comes in three distinct styles. Understanding them helps you match your trip to your shooting priorities.
| Format | What It's Like | Wild Connection |
|---|---|---|
| In-Park Tented Camps | Camps positioned inside the parks so you're at the best sightings before any day-tripper arrives — and back out for last light without a long drive. | 9/10 — Recommended |
| Migration Mobile Camps | Seasonal camps that move with the herds, putting you within minutes of the river crossings and calving concentrations at the key light hours. | 10/10 — Best for migration |
| Comfort Lodges | Well-equipped lodges with reliable power, fast Wi-Fi for backing up cards, and early breakfasts packed for the road. | 6/10 — Best for workflow |
An itinerary built around light, position and patience in Tanzania's most photogenic parks. Departs Arusha or Moshi.
| Day | Route & Highlights | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| Day 01 | Arusha/Moshi → Tarangire. A full day of elephant herds against ancient baobabs, superb backlit dust at golden hour, and warm side-light along the river. | In-park tented camp or similar |
| Day 02 | Tarangire → Central Serengeti. Transfer timed to arrive for the afternoon light. Kopje-top lions and vast plains reward wide compositions and long-lens portraits. | Serengeti in-park camp or similar |
| Day 03 | Full day in the Serengeti. A pre-dawn-to-dusk day working big-cat territory — cheetah on the hunt, leopard in the acacias, lion on the kopjes. | Serengeti in-park camp or similar |
| Day 04 | Serengeti field day. Depending on season, a full day at the migration herds or the Mara River crossings — dust, drama and movement at the best light angles. | Serengeti in-park / mobile camp or similar |
| Day 05 | Ngorongoro Crater → Home. A dawn crater descent for rhino, elephant and lion in soft early light before the crowds, then the drive back with full cards. | Ends: Arusha/Moshi or Zanzibar extension |
See how vehicle setup, positioning and cost compare across three photographic tiers — from keen enthusiast to full professional workshop.
A private 4x4 with beanbags and charging, standard seating, staying in comfortable ensuite tented camps in or beside the parks for good dawn access.
A reduced-seat private 4x4 with beanbags every row and ample charging, staying in in-park and migration mobile camps for first-on-scene access.
An exclusive vehicle able to go off-road in private concessions with low-angle rigs, staying in exclusive camps and private concessions for total shooting freedom.
For wildlife, a telephoto in the 100–400mm or 200–600mm range is ideal, plus a wider lens for landscapes and scene-setting. Bring more memory cards and batteries than you think you need, a beanbag-friendly setup, and a dust blower — the plains are dusty. We provide beanbags and in-vehicle charging, and send a full gear checklist when you book.
Select your season, group size and duration for a baseline photographic safari cost estimate. Final quotes are tailored to your exact route and dates.
Not at all. Our photographic safaris suit everyone from pros with long telephotos to enthusiasts with a bridge camera or even a good phone. The vehicle setup, timing and positioning benefit every level. If you are shooting seriously, we'll tailor the pace and stops even more tightly around image-making.

We deliberately limit seats on photographic safaris so everyone has a clear, unobstructed firing line from both sides of the vehicle and room for their gear. Your safari is private to your party, and we recommend a maximum of four photographers per vehicle for genuine comfort and clean sightlines.
It depends on your target. The dry season (June–October) offers clear light and the dramatic Mara River crossings. January–March brings the calving season with newborns and intense predator action on the southern plains. Green season (April–May) gives moody skies, lush backgrounds and superb light with far fewer vehicles in your frame.
Because every photographer has different priorities — the migration, big cats, birdlife or landscapes — generalised estimates only serve as a starting point.
